Alfred BAILEY, son of John BAILEY (c. 1847-c. 1920) and Emma HUGGINS (c. 1850-c. 1934), was born on 1 January 1873 in North Lopham, Norfolk. Alfred was attested into the military on 20 April 1893 at London - joined the Coldstream Guards, (Private 9776?), serving at home. From 10 March 1899 to 20 July 1902 he served abroad, at Gibralta until 27.10.1899, then on to South Africa and the Boer War until November 1902. On returning he served at home until his discharge on 19.04.1905. He married Jane HOLDEN on 4 November 1902 in North Lopham - groom, single, 29, labourer; bride, single, 31. Alfred was attested into the military on 20 January 1915 at Windsor - Coldstream Guards. On 12 August 1915 he was posted to the 5th Bn. Coldstream Guards, Private 144979. At some point Alfred may have transferred to the 15th Coy. Royal Army Medical Corps, Private 4979. There is a note to say he was registered as a mental attendant on 31 October 1918, possibly in the R.A.M.C. Alfred was on the in 1918 Absent Voters List, living at The Green in North Lopham - 9449 Pte., No. 8 Co. Res. Bn. Coldstream Gds. He was transferred on 30 September 1919 to the Class “Z” Army Reserve on demobilization. His pension record stated disabilities of mitral regurgitation and rheumatism as a 40% disability, which was aggravated by his military service. He died on 29 August 1941 in Norwich, Norfolk - aged 68 years. He was buried on 2 September 1941 in North Lopham. He had his estate probated on 19 November 1941 - “BAILEY Alfred of North Lopham Norfolk died 29 August 1941 at The Norfolk and Norwich Hospital Norwich Probate Llandudno 18 November to Alfred Bailey bricklayer. Effects £150 4s.”
